Understanding "The Voice" - With Julian Leeser MP
A referendum is coming!
For many it is their first participation in a referendum. For some of our students it will be their first time officially participating in Australian democratic processes having recently turned 18.
All proposed referendum amendments are important and require careful consideration, and this is certainly true for the proposed amendment labelled “The Voice”.
On 19 June 2023, Parliament agreed the constitutional amendment and question would be as follows:
“A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
Do you approve this proposed alteration?”
The Barker Institute warmly invites all in the community (not just those formally associated with Barker College) to hear from our electorate’s representative to Parliament, Julian Leeser MP, Federal Member for Berowra. Those following the media on the topic will be familiar with Mr Leeser’s own position on “The Voice” and that regardless of how someone will vote, that debate on the issues should be conducted, with wisdom, care and respect.
Mr Leeser has kindly agreed to questions from the audience.
