At the time of colonisation, it is estimated that between 750,000-1 million Aboriginal people (consisting of 700 tribes) spoke 250 languages throughout Australia. Today, the number of Indigenous languages learnt by children and used in everyday life is thought to have fallen below 20. In recent years, governments at the national and state level have sought to prioritise the revival of Indigenous language teaching and learning.
