Indigenous Cultural Knowledge & Science with Corey Tutt OAM

Indigenous Australians have been making observations, drawing conclusions, and desseminating their knowledge for 65,000 years - long before the Scientific Method was formally established. To better understand Indigenous cultural knowledge and its relationship to modern Science, Barker College Science Deparment and the Barker Institute has invited a knowledgeable and engaging speaker, Corey Tutt OAM, to share with the Barker Community.
Corey Tutt OAM is a Kamilaroi man from Nowra on the New South Wales south coast. Many will know Corey as the founder of DeadlyScience, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to provide science books and telescopes to remote schools in Australia, and connects young Indigenous people with mentors to encourage their participation in STEM subjects. Corey is also a highly successful author publishing bestselling and multi award winning book The First Scientists and also his latest book, This Book Thinks Ya Deadly which celebrates over 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This event is the first keynote lecture of a conference for Year 12 Science Extension students. Science Extension is a 1-unit course for Year 12 students which involves them doing a first hand research project (see Barker's journal of student research here) and learning about the History and Philosophy of Science.

The community is invited to stay after the first lecture from Corey to view the student posters in the Senior School Hub, and the second keynote lecture on the Philosophy of Science. The second keynote will be presented by Dr Matthew Hill, Director Barker Institute. He has been involved in the Science Extension course for many years. He loves reflecting on the impact of the underlying philosophies of science on modern Science Education and will be exploring syllubus content of epistemology, empericism, induction and deduction and more, and wrestling with what this means for the question of "What makes Science, Science?".
