When the New South Wales Education Standards Authority announced a new course “Science Extension” to commence in 2019 we were thrilled that there was an opportunity for a formally-assessed capstone experience in Science for our students.

From the perspective of the Barker Institute it was an exciting chance to support students doing academic research, alongside other subjects such as History Extension, Music Extension and English Extension 2.

Where many capstone project courses fail is the at final step of the research process – dissemination. Research is not merely the process of conducing an investigation and writing a report, but sharing it with the wider community so that people can learn, critique, have other student researchers at multiple schools build on the projects published. We are so glad to be able to publish this journal each year now celebrating 84 articles each representing genuine contributions to science.
